About the artist
Stephanie Rew works in Edinburgh, Scotland and has been based in the same studio for over 20 years. Painting in the figurative realist style Stephanie creates oil paintings with gold leaf, combining traditional Early Renaissance gilding techniques with more contemporary ways of painting.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Pattern, colour and texture of textiles and costume are intrinsic to my work, giving the painting a tactile and dramatic element, placing the model in a timeless era. Tone and form as well as strong light and colour is important to me, as I concentrate on the relationship between tonality and texture whilst keeping a private, reflective mood with the work.
I am interested in the historical element of art and theatrical costumes have always been a favoured theme, I have been using couture garments along with the kimono to add drama and design to my art.
A narrative is not the most important element to my work, I prefer for the viewer to decide on their story. To me the most important thing is conveying an emotion. The women in my paintings are symbolic of different elements of femininity and the human condition. I take them out of the modern setting by dressing them in imagined crowns and robes, making them into Goddesses of our own time.
I incorporate gold leaf into my work, using traditional water gilding techniques alongside newer ways of gilding, exploring the relationship between the decorative reflective gold leaf surface and a fully rendered oil painting. The design and pattern of the surface and textiles have become an important part of my painted compositions.
