About the artist
Hera Mysterium is her pseudonym in Latin, which means Lady Mystery. Hera is a Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist. As a child, she attended an art studio where she learned how to express her imagination and discovered her inspiration in the works of Frank Frazetta. She admires many artists but Frank Frazetta had an impact on her, “he was bringing to life scenes of epic battles, fierce warriors, and the most beautiful women with unparalleled intensity”. The type of legacy Hera wants to leave behind.
Unfortunately, in the past Hera let people’s opinions get to her and prioritized things that weren’t right for her, causing her to abandon making art for almost a decade. But in April of 2021, she decided to start creating again. However, Hera was rusty as hell! After so many years of not using her wrists for what they were meant for, she had to teach herself all over again. But that didn’t stop her, and she has been exploring all possible mediums ever since.
Hera Mysterium’s determined to leave a twisted but beautiful mark in this world. She likes to explore the fusion of gothic elegance and macabre beauty, inviting people to dance on the edge of darkness and light. With a touch of the macabre and a penchant for the surreal, her work explores a world where darkness and beauty intertwine. “I want to evoke a sense of unease and fascination in anyone who experiences my art.”
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Many of Hera Mysterium’s artworks celebrate the strength, resilience, and beauty of the feminine spirit. Powerful goddesses, enchanting witches, or mysterious sirens, embodying themes of female empowerment and autonomy. In some instances, she would tell the sad tale of women’s lives. She often delves into the depths of the human psyche, exploring themes of dreams, nightmares, and the subconscious mind. Themes of mortality, transformation, and transcendence are fascinating to her, and she is incorporating it more and more into her work. Exploring the cycle of life and death, the passage of time, and the journey of the soul beyond the physical realms. And of course, not forgetting her never-ending love for Mythology, which is often depicted in her work.
Hera uses a variety of mediums like acrylics, oils, watercolors, charcoal, ink, raisin and ink as well as digital painting and dark photography. And she likes to mix things up by adding melted candle wax and dried roses into her creations. Who knew ruining your floors and carpets could be so much fun?
