About the artist
Rute Ventura is a Portuguese multidisciplinary visual artist born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1982 based in NYC. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sculpture in 2004 and with a Masters degree in Fine Arts in 2006 from the School of Art and Design, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
In 2005 Rute received a grant for an abroad program of studies at the Accademia di Belli Arti in Venice, Italy. Going back to Italy in 2014 to learn Trompe L’oeil techniques at the Accademia del Superfuluo, in Rome.
After moving to New York City, in 2009, Rute began her career in Arts Education providing art workshops for under-resourced NY City Public Schools; while continuing producing her artworks from her home-studio in Ridgewood Queens, NY.
During this past couple of years Rute has been distinguished as an “Interesting Surrealist Artist” by Bizarre Doctor; exhibiting her artwork through open calls at the following highlighted places: Annemarie Art Center in Solomons MD; Venice Biennial in Italy; Vestige Concept Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA; Cultural Center of Cape Cod, MA; Trolley Barn Gallery in Poughkeepsie, NY; JCAL, in Jamaica Queens, NY; Hudson Valley MOCA. Attributed the Public Choice Award at Diversia Group Exhibition by Exhibizone, Talent Prize Award by Teravarna Art Gallery and Best Experimental Film with The Dialogue by Purple Sky International Film Festival. Having two Solo Shows in 2023: Self Awareness – The Power Within at Supermoon Art Space in NY, and at Galeria – The Art Venue in Westfield in NJ.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Rute Ventura’s art explores identity, reflective self-journey – social and cultural roles. It represents the emotional experiences we go through in life. Explores ideas and feelings that range from illness to wellness, in the form of painting, wearable art, performance art and video art. In her creative process she pays close attention to thoughts, to conscious awareness. Ideas are then transformed into images received throughout meditative states of mind, as visualizations. These images are connected with physical, emotional and subconscious sensations: archetypes, duality, time, fairy tales, occult lore, space and matter; in a bold and symbolic way.
The backgrounds strike the eye levitating the space creating a subtle sense of depth and ether. The figures produce dynamisms, forming structure out of light and shadow, providing surreal narratives allowing deep allegorical interpretations. Rute particularly interested in portraying emotional sensations by representing the human essence using the body, conceptual hybrid figures, and animals; communicating the strength, instincts, impulses, and the intuition that thrive within us.
