About the artist
Haejin Yoo is a self-taught acrylic artist, born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Australia. Her work centres on surrealistic expressionism, evoking emotions from both the past and present. In her artistic journey, she extends beyond the canvas, using mixed media such as acrylics, textiles, carpentry, and spray paint to breathe life into her pieces. Whether it’s painting onto the frame itself or incorporating various materials, “I aim to push past the boundaries of a flat surface to create immersive, surreal expressions”.
Haejin discovered her passion for art at a young age, but it wasn’t until in her late twenties that she embraced it fully, following an early career in the sciences. This background has deepened her understanding of acrylics and other mediums, allowing me to explore and experiment further.
Haejin Yoo is the 2nd prize winner of the RAYMAR Traditional Art Award, Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2024
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
In Haejin Yoo’s works, she explores themes of identity, persona, and private introspection. Through surrealism and symbolism, she reflect on how our social interactions and experiences shape who we are over time. In her “Woman in the Bath” series she uses the intimate setting of the bathroom to capture moments of “private thoughts,” where we often reveal our truest selves. Flowers, veiled in a translucent liquid, serve as symbols of the persona—fragile yet beautiful, with layers of meaning beneath the surface. “My art aims to evoke a sense of relief and connection, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own inner worlds and moments of self-discovery”.
