About the artist
Yulia Pustoshkina is a third-generation artist who was born in Karelia, Russia and immigrated to Australia in 2001. Growing up in a family of various creatives who were constantly engaged in artistic activities had a profound impact on shaping her lifestyle. Yulia’s father, who was also her art teacher at the local Art School in Petrozavodsk, was the one who truly inspired her in the arts. Under his guidance, she honed her skills in drawing, painting, composition, and the art of allowing the imagination to flow freely.
Currently based in Sydney, Australia, Yulia’s artistic style is naturally influenced by her European background. Her current painting technique is a result of extensive practice in working with miniature paintings, which are common in folklore depictions. She has managed to carry out high detailization of imagery onto large canvases as well, and has come up with her own title for her artistic style, Folkloric Surrealism. The artist’s anthropomorphic characters exhibit facial expressions, and the viewer can pick up on the mood of the painting. The compositions add to the story that unfolds. The artist prefers that the viewer decides for themselves the interpretation of each artwork. Yulia’s signature style is infused with a flair of humor. Most often, her characters are on the go somewhere, which probably explains her own love for travel, where she picks up new inspirations for her work. Her main objective is for her paintings to bring joy and promote kindness and acceptance of all living creatures.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Almost every painting tells a story and most often the story has a deeper meaning that it may seem at a first glance. Stories inspired by any kind of folklore, Yulia Pustoshkina’s interest is in metaphysics, her travels around the globe, her childhood memories and just things that are common in life. She likes to explore the themes of love and kindness, the unity between animals, plants, humans in the Universe. Every living creature is equally important. In her paintings, animals interact with each other, almost like humans. They have feelings and emotions. She only pictures positivity in her work and does not paint scenes with blood and suffering. A dash of humor in her work is present in almost every painting she creates. She believes it has become a part of her signature style.
