About the artist
Born in Taiwan 1966, Lucia Heffernan was inspired to paint and draw at a very early age by her mother, a watercolor artist and teacher. In the early 1990s, after graduating with honors from Binghamton University in Fine Arts and Design, she established LDD, a multi-million dollar award-winning creative design agency. Lucia moved to Utah in 2000 where her creative focus shifted from digital design to oil painting.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Lucia Heffernan loves to play – with animals, narratives, imagery, humor. She especially enjoys playing with reality by bending the rules and creating work that however implausible – at least for a moment seems ALMOST possible. Work that not only delights viewers, but asks them to consider their own personal reality.
Through her oil paintings, Lucia morphs everyday human experiences into an alternate universe where an animal is just as likely as a person to sit down to some light reading, brush their teeth before bed, or profess their undying love for another through a grand gesture. Her body of work aims to simultaneously make light of, and marvel at, our uniquely human existence. A graphic designer by trade and an oil painter by design, she continually experiments with different styles of contemporary realism that balance her artistic sensibilities, technique, and unique sense of humor. As she evolves, what remains constant is her respect for the animals that inspire her, and her desire to bring a smile to the face of every viewer.
