About the artist
Behnaz Larsen is an Iranian-American artist and children’s author and illustrator residing in Copenhagen with her Danish family. Her work can be described as whimsical and allegorical and she is strongly inspired by H C Andersen, Rene´Magritte and Iranian patterns. Her focus is on identity, heritage and the art of living.
She uses oil on canvas and fuses 15th to 17th century European Old Master’s techniques and taints them with modern twists and simplicity.
Behnaz Larsen is a post-graduate M.Sc from University of Copenhagen.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Environment: As a biologist, Behnaz care deeply for the environment. Our ecology is circular and when we tip the balance with our desire to make life easier for ourselves, we create a loop that eventually comes back to haunt us. She tries to address these issues as delicately as possible by creating images that carry hints about my concerns.
Feminism: As an Iranian who has survived gender-apartheid, has lived in six different countries and felt racism and discrimination for most of her life, Behnaz is very keen on feminism. Equal rights are very important for the overall health of a society and since she love humans as a whole, she would like to offer a visual understanding of how beautiful it is to live together despite being different.
Identity and heritage: Behnaz see how heritage and history take away people’s free will and make them slaves to traditions and rituals that should have been long forgotten, she also sees the beauty in belonging and being a part of. So, her creations show the beauty and the tragedy of inheriting a culture. “I aim, always, to make these statements as obscure and non-dramatic as possible because I believe I was put on this earth to make people happy and not ashamed about who or how they are”.
