About the artist
Roch Urbaniak, a Polish artist and author, holds a degree in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he graduated with honors, earning a gold medal for the top diploma in 2011 from the Fine Arts Society in Krakow. He has received multiple awards at the International Comic Book Festival in Łódź, including the Grand Prix in 2014 for best short comic. In 2022, the European Science Fiction Society inducted him into their Hall of Fame as the Best Fantasy Artist. Urbaniak’s art, blending a love of global mythologies, illustration, and pop culture, features paintings that tell compelling stories.
He has penned four children’s books in the “Papiernik” series, illustrating his fables with his own art work. His paintings also appear on puzzles produced by companies in Poland, the United States, and Taiwan.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Roch Urbaniak has always been captivated by the way painting and storytelling can intertwine, crafting mesmerizing worlds. He encountered academic disdain of narrative or illustrative art during his time at the Academy of Fine Arts, but he remained committed to his passion. He carved a niche for himself within the Polish art scene, championing the value of “fantasy” art, and also the relevance of pop culture as a source of inspiration.
As a result, his paintings tell tales. Sometimes, he narrates them himself, utilizing the art as illustrations in his books; other times, they are open to the viewer’s personal interpretation, ready to be reimagined.
Press
Roch Urbaniak’s paintings have been featured in his books including Papiernik – Where the stories come from, Papiernik – Market of the Stories, Tiger Charmer, Papiernik – Tiger Fables, and notable magazines including Artist and Art, and New Fantasy.
