About the artist
Yinsey Wang is a part-time, self-taught self-portrait photographer and costumer and full-time lawyer. Born and raised in England as a person of Chinese heritage, she explores identity through her art. Her journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she used time at home to create and support her mental health. She enjoys exploring themes of feminism, representation and transformation. Her work is inspired by mythology, folklore and history, and she looks to her work as a means of playful self-empowerment and fanciful escapism. She has been published in various magazines and platforms. She is also co-founder (alongside Lillian Liu and Bella Kotak) of the Enchanted Asian Day initiative which celebrates Asian creators around the world.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Yinsey Wang confronts years of internalising cultural expectations, stereotypes and self-doubt as a British-Chinese person through reinvention. To her, the act of self-portraiture is an addictive type of therapy and an experimental base to be playful with self-expression. It forces one to confront the self in different ways: how one wishes to be perceived; how one perceives themselves; and how one thinks others perceive them. These concepts interplay with each other, as Yinsey blends all her artistic influences, aesthetic loves and stylistic approach to produce her images.
