About the artist
Tokyo Jesus is a Japanese artist who has been active since 2009. From a young age, he was deeply captivated by nature, living organisms, and the hidden structures of the world. Often feeling disconnected from the interests and conversations of those around him, he turned inward—drawing, imagining alternate realms, and immersing himself in books. Yet the more he read, the more the mysteries multiplied, and the workings of the world remained beyond reach.
During his time in art school, he began creating props for commercials, television programs, and film productions. After graduating, he worked as a prototype sculptor for a major toy company, a position he eventually left due to physical and emotional strain.
Years later, with the support of family and friends, he established his artistic practice under the name Tokyo Jesus and opened an art gallery in Tokyo. He came to understand that while the world’s structure might remain unknowable, art offered the freedom to construct a world of his own. Although the gallery became popular, he ultimately closed it to devote himself fully to his rapidly expanding art practice.
For more than 15 years, his sculptures, drawings, and art toys have been celebrated internationally for their singular, immersive vision, earning him a dedicated global collector base. Now living with his wife in a quiet town outside Tokyo, he continues to pursue new creative challenges. In 2025, Tokyo Jesus was selected as a finalist for the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Tokyo Jesus’s work centers on the boundary between life and death, the invisible threads connecting all things to memory, and the quiet beauty of decay. He views the world as a layered structure that loops endlessly—where joy and sorrow, strength and fragility, life and death coexist and repeat through time.
His art reflects an animistic worldview in which every object possesses a soul, carries memory, and exists in parallel. Within this universe, the beings who inhabit it face hardship with resilience—moving forward, confronting fate, and continuing to live with a fierce, quiet determination. These are the stories he brings to life through his work.
