About the artist
Susan Grace is a contemporary figurative painter from the United States whose oil works revolve around the human body, though her subjects rarely feel fixed or static. Instead, each portrait suggests a sense of transformation, capturing figures in states of transition. Her practice centers largely on the female form, examining the many dimensions through which feminine identity can be shaped and expressed. Through the use of organic elements, decorative details, and masks, her figures convey layered psychological and spiritual conditions at once revealing and concealing, embodying both persona and inner essence.
Before dedicating herself fully to painting, Grace worked as a professor of modern and contemporary literature, teaching at universities across the United States and in Athens, Greece. This literary and theatrical foundation continues to influence her visual language. Her compositions often employ techniques such as layering, fragmentation, and distortion, opening up space for ambiguity and multiple readings. Rather than presenting resolved narratives, her paintings hint at unfolding stories figures caught in evolving, unfinished dramas. In these works, identity remains fluid and unresolved, embracing transformation and resisting closure. Grace’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums across the United States and has appeared in publications such as Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and New American Paintings.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Susan Grace’s work centers on contemporary, surreal portraits of women, where the female figure becomes a vessel for exploring archetypal themes such as the divine feminine, transformation, identity, and the inner psyche. Her paintings draw on symbolic language, presenting figures that feel both timeless and deeply personal, as if they exist between myth and lived experience.
Her subjects often appear introspective and enigmatic self-contained, private, and quietly powerful. Surrounded by elements of nature and typically depicted alone, these women seem absorbed in their own interior worlds. The spaces they inhabit feel dreamlike and removed from ordinary reality, suggesting an intimate, otherworldly realm shaped as much by emotion and imagination as by the physical world.
