About the artist

Eva Toorenent, also known as the artist Evaboneva, is a freelance illustrator and gallery artist born on June 12, 1997, in Amsterdam. She grew up in Heemstede and Amsterdam, and now resides in Zandvoort. Specializing in fantasy, surreal, and imaginative art, she draws inspiration from local folklore, history, and the surrealism movement.

Her work is rooted in narrative art, and her creations have been featured in publications, galleries, and entertainment productions. After completing high school, she studied illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Upon graduation, she dedicated herself fully to her artistic career. In 2020, she wrote and illustrated her book The Wonderful World of Eva, published by Clavis Publishing. The book, which explores whimsical and strange creatures from her childhood, was first released in Dutch as De Wondere Wereld van Eva in August 2021, and later in English in June 2022.

Alongside her commissioned projects for clients such as 3Dtotal, Wacom, Corpse in Training LLC, Visual Art Passage, 21-Draw, US Games, Jora Vision, Creative Bloq, Imagine FX, Folk Film, Teddy Fresh, and De Duystere Markt, Eva creates pop-surrealist paintings that have been exhibited internationally. Her work has appeared in galleries including Haven Gallery, Arch Enemy Arts, Brasswork Gallery, Revolution Gallery, Beinart Gallery, and WOW X WOW Gallery.

Whether through creature design, gallery art, fashion design, book covers, or poster design, Eva continues to expand her creative practice.

Artwork Themes & Subject Matter

Magical Realism: People often ask Evaboneva in what world her creatures and art live, and she always answers that they live in our world. She wants people to see the magic in our world, and she wants to highlight that with her art and creatures.

Women in Horror: She finds it endlessly fascinating how media portrayals of women in horror and media affect societal views of women. This interest began during her teen years, and she has explored this subject further in her Thesis: “How Women in Horror Influence Societal Views of Women.”

Folklore: Evaboneva gets inspired by her direct environment. You can very clearly tell where she is living by looking at her work from that period. When she was living in a city with a rich history of knights and kings, her work reflected that. Now she lives by the sea, and the sea life and the history of a local fishing community inspire more and more of her art.

Monsters: Monsters, creatures, and their stories have always fascinated her. She used to be a very scared child. Although she was deadly afraid of everything, she was also drawn to all things scary and horror. Together with her family, she went to the local video store/library, and she used to sneak off to the horror section. She read the back of the DVDs and books, and looked at the monstrous images accompanying them. These books, stories, and images kept her up at night, but she kept coming back out of a morbid curiosity. At one point, she started to draw monsters herself. But instead of making them as scary as possible, she gave them names, made them cute, and turned them into pets. This eventually gave her a healthy outlet for her fears and shaped her into the artist she is today.

Fantasy: Evaboneva has been fascinated by imaginative worlds and fantasy since she was very young. Since she is quite dyslexic, words often fail to express the stories she wants to tell. To compensate, she draws her fantasy stories. Narrative Art is a great passion of hers for this reason.

Nature: Nature is a great source of inspiration for her. She always says, “You don’t have to invent anything new. Nature itself is strange enough. The only difference between a monster and an animal is that the monster has not been discovered yet.”
