About the artist
Nico Pearleyes is a French painter and graphic designer. He started painting during the lockdown in 2020 and quickly discovered it was what he had been seeking for years to express himself. He has lived in South Korea 3 times and it has significantly influenced his artistic practice.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Nico Pearleyes explores the boundary between reality and imagination through a visual language shaped by diverse influences—ranging from Renaissance painting to traditional Korean art, from skateboard culture to science fiction and from post-impressionist landscapes to pop surrealism.
His work stems from the idea that there is no strict separation between the real and the imagined. Reality is shaped by imagination, just as imagination is grounded in reality. Perception is not a neutral process; it is filtered through emotion, culture, and aesthetics in order to become meaningful. In Nico Pearleyes’ view, art plays a vital role in this exchange—it nourishes the imagination and gives shape to our perception of the world, to our consciousness. Art thus doesn’t merely reflect reality; it actively constructs it, and even invents entirely new ones.
By blending a variety of artistic references, Nico Pearleyes embraces the hybrid nature of contemporary perception. His paintings often represent distorted landscapes, symbolic animals, and ambiguous characters, exploring our way to represent reality, mixing both what is real and imagined. These visual elements allow him to question narratives, shift perspectives, and build worlds that blur the lines between the real and the imaginary, the known and the unknown. Through this playful exploration, Nico Pearleyes invites viewers to reflect on our power to become aware of our own outlook on reality and our freedom to redefine our experience.
