About the artist
Camille Kathryn Wiseman is an emerging Australian artist who grew up between New Orleans, USA, and Byron Bay, Australia. She has been creating art for as long as she can remember, with a deep appreciation for spending time in art galleries from a young age.
Primarily self-taught, Camille spent the past decade immersed in the fields of biomedical engineering and clinical prosthetics before dedicating herself fully to art in early 2025. This unique combination of scientific knowledge and creative expression informs her work, offering a distinctive perspective on the intersection of nature, humanity, and the environment.
She has since moved to Italy to pursue training in figure painting at Studio Escalier and to study fresco painting techniques in Florence.
Camille Kathryn Wiseman is the 2nd Prize Winner of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize Catherine K. Gyllerstrom Emerging Artist Award 2025
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Camille Kathryn Wiseman’s practice primarily explores the spiritual and ecological power of water. Drawing from the blue humanities – a field that centres the ocean in cultural and environmental discourse – Camille uses allegory and symbolism to examine modernity’s fraught relationship with the natural world. The fish is a recurring motif in her work, representing our shared lifeblood and the delicate thread between human and nonhuman life. For Camille, water is not just a subject but a sacred force – one that shapes, heals, and binds all living beings. Influenced by time spent in Italy’s cathedrals and museums, her work draws from storytelling and sacred art traditions. Though not raised in a religious household, she finds deep resonance in allegory, using it to tell urgent, contemporary myths.
