About the artist

David Derflinger is an artist and engineer based in Graz, Austria. After completing his Master’s degree in engineering (2021), he, instead of making the choice between the arts and the technical field of his study, has found a balance between the two sides of his professional life—one complimenting the other. In 2025 David has been chosen as the 1st place winner of the “SMART SCHOOL!” January Art Prize selected by Marc Scheff.

Artwork Themes & Subject Matter

David Derflinger’s paintings are rooted in realism with a tendency towards melancholic themes and surreal elements. The paintings often deal with self-reflective topics, masked in symbolism and nuance. David hopes to create works that offer the opportunity for the viewer to find their own meaning in it. “My works mean a lot to me and what I see in them often changes quite a bit over time. I hope some aspects of my work can find a person where they currently are.”, David explains.
