About the artist

Xavier Escala (1975) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Santa Isabel de Hungría in Spain, where he completed his degree in sculpture. He continued his education at the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts in Italy and developed the marble sculpture techniques at the Corsanini sculpture studio. He learnt direct wood carving from the sculptor Aron Demetz. In 2017 he married the artist Nina Murashkina.

Xavier Escala is the Grand Prize Winner of the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2025

Artwork Themes & Subject Matter

Xavier Escala’s sculpture emerges from a Mediterranean spirit enriched by classical Greek, Etruscan, and Egyptian influences, yet it transcends them to form a language uniquely his own. His work reflects a constant search for the metaphysical essence of humanity, portraying figures that are both collective and solitary, often fused with architectural elements as if they were living structures. This emptiness is never nihilistic but profoundly spiritual. For Escala, sculpture is both a noble craft and a journey of inner knowledge, where mythological symbolism, universal dualities, and timeless truths converge through his exceptional mastery of drawing, modeling, and direct carving.
