About the artist
Brett Andrus is a 48 year old Colorado native. He studied painting and art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design before returning home to Colorado in 2001. In 2009, Andrus co-founded two award-winning galleries, The Modbo and S.P.Q.R, in downtown Colorado Springs. Currently, Andrus owns and operates Bosky Studio.
Between the years of 2010-2022 Brett created and exhibited in 17 solo exhibitions occurring in Denver, Santa Fe, Colorado Springs, and Trinidad. In 2016, Brett received the Artist of the Year Award from the Pikes Peak Arts Council. In 2025, he was named as a finalist for the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize.
In 2018 Brett was diagnosed with a rare, slow moving version of leukemia. In 2021, Brett started a 14 month chemotherapy journey that resulted in nearly losing his eyesight. After 4 eye surgeries and a large amount of perseverance, he is currently disease free and has regained his vision. Every day he paints with joy, cognizant of what he almost lost.
Brett’s focus is on the narrative power of the human figure and portraiture, utilizing elements of magical realism and surrealism. He sets out to inspire an emotional interaction with the viewer. His goal is to create with integrity, to be personal, to be honest. He believes in his viewer and in their ability to engage and to be part of the conversation. His mantra for living a great life is to make a space for creation, connection and impact on a daily basis. Brett loves to paint. He thrives in front of his easel creating beautiful things and telling stories.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
In all of the work that Brett Andrus makes, his main goal is to create a meaningful emotional connection with his viewer. Utilizing both the figure, landscape and still life, he draws on the muse of magical realism to create narratives about loss, perseverance and what it might mean to move through a modern world designed to leave us disconnected and alone. His work is about the ghosts of lost ideals, and the power we have to re-write our stories.
