About the artist
Joa Vilallonga is a Peruvian-American contemporary artist based in Florida. She completed coursework at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Lima before earning a BFA in Illustration, summa cum laude, from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. In 2017, she received FIT’s Antonio López Alumni Grant.
Her practice spans painting, sculpture, and poetry, with figurative portraiture at its core. Through layered surfaces and restrained tonal transitions, she creates a contemplative atmosphere that defines her visual language. Her paintings unfold as an exploration of stillness, perception, and emotional presence. Her work has been presented in group exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, and Tbilisi. She is a member of Unearthed, an invitation-only community for artists working in analogue, handmade media.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Joa Vilallonga’s paintings explore liminal states beyond linear time, opening visual fields where stillness becomes active. Working within contemporary figuration, she approaches portraiture as a psychological landscape. Her figures merge subtly with their surroundings, inhabiting states of silent depth. Rooted in a self-contained feminine presence, they neither seek approval nor resolution; vulnerability and strength coexist without performance.
Natural elements such as water, wind, gravity, and light function as compositional forces. Water plays a central role in her imagery, suggesting fluidity and receptivity. The human form appears permeable, shaped by transitions that soften boundaries and slow perception. Animals and small organic forms act as quiet counterparts, grounding what cannot be directly spoken.
Through restrained composition, muted palettes, and subtle luminosity, she builds contemplative images that invite sustained attention while leaving interpretation open.
