About the artist
Melbourne-based artist Jackson Howell, known professionally as beachghost, draws deeply from his upbringing along the Victorian coast, where constant immersion in nature first sparked his love of storytelling. This early connection was further fueled by an intense appetite for film, video games, and anime—visual worlds that fed his overactive imagination and shaped his narrative-driven approach to art.
Working primarily with traditional media, Howell explores the intersections of pop culture and mythology, creating works that feel both familiar and unsettling. Bright pastel watercolours collide with dark, inky forms, twisting and distorting nostalgic childhood memories into something more ambiguous and emotionally charged. Through this contrast, beachghost invites viewers to revisit the stories of their youth, reimagined through a lens of myth, memory, and quiet unease.
Artwork Themes & Subject Matter
Beachghost explores dark, evocative themes illuminated by vibrant pastel hues, creating immersive worlds inhabited by surreal creatures, transforming figures, and mythical archetypes. Within these dreamlike landscapes, the beautiful and the grotesque intertwine seamlessly, brought to life through meticulously detailed forms that feel both enchanting and unsettling.
Magical realism underpins his compositions, shaping scenes that blur the boundaries between imagination and memory. Whether deconstructing familiar pop-culture iconography or conjuring entirely new characters from his inner world, Beachghost crafts visual narratives that invite viewers into a realm where fantasy, identity, and transformation continually unfold.
